Growth Group Questions | Week of February 17, 2013

trey-ratcliff-lake from-aboveHere are this week’s Growth Group questions based on Mark 8:34. And remember, if you were not able to be in the service on Sunday, you can listen to the sermon at the Immanuel Bible Church website.

Striving with you to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18).

  • Consider the following two stanzas from Isaac Watts’ hymn “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.” What does it say about discipleship?

When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.

Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.

  • What was meant by the refrain in the sermon regarding Jesus’ call to discipleship being both impossible and easy? Why is it impossible? Why easy? How would you describe your experience of it on a daily basis?
  • What are the three imperatives Jesus gives in his call to discipleship? What does it mean to deny yourself? What does it mean to take up your cross? What does it mean to follow Jesus? Which one seems hardest for you and why?
  • How does the church help us in discipleship on a corporate and individual level?
